Q: Do you worry about using household cleaners that may expose your children to harsh chemicals or toxins? Q: Do you ever look for ways to strengthen damaged hair or a distressed scalp? Q: Are you ever in need of products to keep your skin feeling and looking healthy and young? Q: Do you ever experience occasional digestive discomfort? Q: Do you ever experience discomfort associated with occasional tension in the neck or head? Q: Do you suffer from discomfort associated with seasonal and environmental threats? Q: Are you ever in need of products to help support a healthy immune system? Q: Do you enjoy adding powerful and natural flavors to your entrees, beverages, or desserts? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you might have more use for essential oils in your life than you think. While some view essential oils as mysterious or complicated, they can be used for household cleaning, cooking and baking, improving well-being, and more. Along with the applications for everyday life, many enjoy essential oils because of their health benefits, as well as their postive effects on emotions.
While some may think that using essential oils for personal care is messy, inconvenient, or the same as using other hygienic products, it is important to note that essential oils provide a pure, non-toxic way to care for the body, and are easy to incorporate into your daily routine.
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has produced a list called Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), which identifies essential oils as safe to be used internally as non-medical constituents. The GRAS list provides general safety suggestions as well as information about plants and other substances that have a well-documented history of safe internal use. While there are essential oils with applications that extend beyond this list, the GRAS list is a credible resource to help confirm the safety of using essential oils internally.
Traditionally, certain essential oil application methods have been preferred or used exclusively. However, as the research surrounding essential oils continues to develop, a greater understanding of application methods is now understood. All application methods are safe when used appropriately, including aromatic, topical, and internal methods. One or multiple application methods can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods.

Essential oils come from plants, fruits, and compounds found in nature, and therefore present a safe way to receive internal benefits. You are most likely already incorporating essential oils into your daily diet, as many of the foods we eat contain a small amount of essential oil. Because our bodies are designed to metabolize and process natural compounds like plants and fruit, we are already equipped to metabolize* essential oils.
To protect the integrity of the essential oil’s delicate chemical profile, all distillation methods require careful attention to time, temperature, and pressure. Each of the aromatic compounds that make up an essential oil has a different sensitivity to heat. Some molecules will remain completely unaffected by high temperatures while others are very delicate and can be destroyed if the temperature of the system gets too high. Meticulous control of the distillation conditions is vital to successful essential oil production.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, flowers, bark, rind, and leaves of plants, extracted and distilled for health benefits! They are extremely potent – 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. In fact, ONE drop of certified pure peppermint essential oil is the equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea!  They are potent so it is imperative to have the top quality essential oil.

Essential oils work to restore balance at a cellular level, naturally.  Essential oils are soluble with the lipids in the cell membrane, allowing them to go through the cellular wall.  The human body has the innate ability to heal itself, essential oils help to support that process --  without the many side effects that are common to synthetic medications.

We have moved so far beyond the stigma of essential oils just being those 'hippie' smelly elixirs. What these oils are doing on a scientific level is unignorable now. Results are being published in mainstream journals, partnerships are being formed with universities, hospitals, doctors and specialist centers. Presently over-reliance on medications are wreaking havoc and complications with prescribed medications are on the rise. The work that doTERRA is doing on a global scale is helping wake up people. I am proud to join them on their mission.

Always choose essential oils that are certified pure by 3rd party testers, sourced from their natural habitat around the world to ensure the proper chemical constituents and structure so that the essential oils work at the optimal level, and they are verified pure, free of fillers, pesticides, and foreign contaminants. There are many companies who do their own testing and have claims on their bottles that they are 100% pure, but then have warnings on the bottle to not even apply topically. This should be a big red flag. The oils we use are safe and pure enough to be taken internally, they even have FDA compliant nutrition facts on the label.

I’d love to save you the time, money, and possible toxicity of purchasing essential oils that claim to be something they are not. The oils we were initially introduced to, before we knew better, went to the wayside since they didn’t work and I even had major adverse reactions.  There is no regulation on the essential oil industry -- we must be wise with what we buy to put on & in our bodies.

Aromatically  |  Any of the essential oils can be used aromatically, and there are great benefits to using them this way. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of aroma on reducing anxious feelings, alleviating stress, and improving mood.

Ways to use oils aromatically:
  • Put a few drops in a diffuser. Most diffusers at doTERRA use water and are effective at dispersing the oil into the air in a fine mist.
  • Place a drop in diffuser jewelry. You can make your own jewelry using lava beads, air drying clay, or terra-cotta clay.
  • Add a few drops to your palms, rub together, and cup your hands over your nose. Inhale deeply.
  • Apply oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your vehicle
  • Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpet, or linens
  • Add oil to a batch of laundry or to wool dryer balls
  • Use in household surface cleaners

Topically  |  There are also many advantages to applying essential oils directly on your skin. Some oils can help with minor skin irritations, blemishes, and more. Essential oils can be diluted for topical use to prevent any possible irritation, and especially strong oils such as Cinnamon Bark, Oregano, or Black Pepper should always be diluted. Diluting essential oils reduces the concentration, but increases the absorption rate of the oil into the skin.

Ways to use oils topically:
  • Oils can also be used in traditional massage, diluted in Fractionated Coconut Oil, or by Hand & Body Lotion.
  • Apply directly to pulse points, or the bottoms of your feet.
  • Place on the specific area of your body that is needing concentrated support (i.e. neck and temples for head tension or  muscles for extra support.)
  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area

Internally  |  When used with caution, the internal use of essential oils is the perfect answer to address targeted areas of need, such as when the immune or the digestive systems need support.*

Any of our bottles that have a “supplement” label on it can be taken internally while bottles that just say “ingredients” should only be used topically or aromatically.

I only recommend the ingestion of dōTERRA oils as each bottle is 100% pure essential oil. Please do not transfer this information to any other brand as the quality of essential oil is unknown.

Ways to use oils internally:
  • In a veggie capsule. Put no more than the recommended daily amounts in a veggie capsule specifically for targeted purposes.

My husband and I chose to use essential oils from a company that we trusted and most closely shared our core values. We are 100% confident that what we purchase are free from adulterations, pesticides, and synthetics.

There is absolutely a difference in essential oils -- your local organic store is NOT the best place to get your oils.  Simply stating 100% pure on a label is NOT a guarantee.

There are two major factors that play a role in the effectiveness and quality of essential oils: plant potency and oil purity.
